Deltas on the move

Deltas are densely populated. Their fertile soil, availability of fresh water, and good opportunities for sea and inland transport make them attractive places to live and work. The downside is their vulnerability to disasters such as tsunamis and hurricanes. This vulnerability increases due to climate change.

Non-grey engineered measures

This report explores the possibilities for non-grey engineered in deltas worldwide. Four strategies are distinguished:

1. physical measures focused on sediment management
2. physical measures focused on water management
3. adaptation
4. doing nothing

The project 'Deltas on the Move' was carried out by Stroming and IVM, as part of 'Space for Climate and Living with Water'. The clients were the International Association of Dredging Companies (IADC) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
